3.2 Non-University Support for Research

(External Funding)

Revised 12/4/00

3.2.1 Identifying Potential Sponsors

The Office of Sponsored Projects (OSP) provides external sponsor information to University faculty and staff to research. OSP's Information Specialist is available to create funding searches, to provide training to individuals and departments, and to provide information on various forms of funding.

The OSP website, www.osp.utah.edu, has a section on funding which provides extensive links to private and federal funding sources. Please keep in mind you can always obtain assistance from the OSP Administrators or from the Information Specialist. For faculty and staff, an electronic form, located on OSP's website, is available to request a funding search be performed. The Information Specialist will use the Internet, CD-ROMs and other databases (see below) to identify potential funding prospects for research projects.

3.2.1.a Searchable Funding Databases

The Office of Sponsored Projects and The Office of the Vice President for Research have purchased annual memberships in several organizations that provide funding opportunities databases. These sites are University of Utah restricted, so in order to access the information you must use a computer located on a University Network.

Community of Science (COS Expertise), www.cos.com, has the largest database on the Web. Search COS for funding opportunities and deadlines from more than 16,000 private and federal sources.

Grants Resource Center (GrantSearch), www.aascu.org/grc/gs/, has a database of more than 1,800 government and private funding programs exclusively designed for public colleges and universities.

Science's Next Wave (GrantsNet), www.grantsnet.org/, database has about 600 funding opportunities and is uniquely targeted to biomedical science training and research.

3.2.1.b E-Mail Alert Services

Many of the funding organization and database e-mail services send out announcements to registered individuals. Such providers include:

Community of Science (COS) Funding Alert, www.grantsnet.org/, is available weekly to faculty members who have registered their profiles in the COS Expertise Database, expertise.cos.com/.

Science's Next Wave GrantsNet, by adding your email address, www.grantsnet.org/, you will receive automatic notifications on updated funding opportunities in the biological and medical sciences.

ScienceWise Alert, http://content.sciencewise.com/informationagent/basicalert.htm, formerly FEDIX Opportunity Alert!!, is an e-mail service that delivers federal research opportunities within your areas of interest. Participating agencies include: DOD, NASA, EPA, ONR, AFOSR, NIH, and USDA.

The Foundation Center (RFP Bulletin), fdncenter.org/pnd/rfp/index.html, is published weekly in conjunction with the posting of Philanthropy News Digest to the Web. Each RFP listing provides a brief overview of a current funding opportunity for a foundation or other grantmaking organization.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) FastLane Custom News Service www.nsf.gov/home/cns/start.htm. The Custom News Service is available to anyone wishing to know about new NSF publications. This service automatically creates a custom web page for you, which you access using your Internet email account. A weekly email alert will be sent listing all documents added the previous week.
