1.2 Office of the Vice President of Research

The Office of the Vice President for Research administers support for research and scholarly/creative work across the entire university community. This support includes responsibilities for:

  1. Extramural and intramural funding of scholarship,
  2. All pertinent federal mandates and guidelines related to support of research programs, and
  3. Necessary infrastructure relevant to the administration of research and scholarly activities.

Externally supported research and training programs form a significant part of the academic enterprise at the University of Utah.

Organizations reporting to the vice president for research are responsible for:

  1. Assisting faculty to identify and obtain extramural and intramural funding for research, training and scholarly activities;
  2. Assisting faculty in proposal and pre-award processing;
  3. Assisting faculty with intellectual property and technology transfer matters;
  4. Assuring that all research applications, awards and activities comply with university policy;
  5. Managing approved cost-sharing arrangements on grants and contracts; and
  6. Assuring university compliance with federal research regulations.

The vice president for research administers all intramural funding programs including the UURF Technology Commercialization Project (TCP), the University Research Committee, the Funding Incentive Seed Grant Program, and the Research Instrumentation Fund. The University's Research Misconduct Investigation Committee, and the Conflicts of Interest Advisory Committee report to the research vice president. The vice president for research serves as president for the University of Utah Research Foundation, Inc.
